Galerina presents Another Note, the first solo exhibition of London-based artist Jameela Stenheden Gordon-King. The exhibition comprises of a series of paintings across multiple mediums centred around the materiality of sound and word.

The works offer two different modes of being. If we relate it to the theory of Jazz, the more painterly works speak to the part of the song that is full of energy and fast moving, a burst – the other pieces are slower, constructed, representing the pause or a break, the contemplation that gathers momentum for the faster works. They move in cycles, each one facilitating the making and reading of the next.

Gordon-King is interested in translating these modes of communication into the visual. The matter of materials is important, using primarily oil and distemper she investigates how they react to an array of surfaces, such as linen, paper and wood.

Alternating between large and small scale, the works invite an intimacy where one is either looking into a scene or a player in its composition, proposing opposing speeds of consumption. Repetition is present. A colour repeats itself and produces a hum or buzz, akin to being sat between two speakers. A vibration that sits above the ears.
